While Google is still mum about when the next version of the company’s mobile operating system, dubbed Android 7.0 Nougat, will be released, LG issued a statement Monday with a tentative time frame. The company said it plans to launch the new LG V20 — the successor to its 2015 flagship smartphone, the V10 — in September, and claimed it would be the first handset to come with the new Android version.
LG didn’t release much information about the upcoming V20, but said that the device “will be a new standard for premium phones (and will feature) more enhanced multimedia capabilities.” During its recent earnings report, LG said its smartphone shipments increased 3 percent from the previous quarter with a total of 13.9 million smartphones shipped in the second quarter of this year.
“The launch of the new V series and expanding sales of mass-tier K and X series models are expected to improve the business unit’s performance next quarter,” the company said, without naming the LG V20, which is rumored to feature a large 1440 x 2560 resolution display, and a secondary screen as found on the V10.
HTC also recently confirmed that Android 7.0 Nougat was on its way to at least three of its popular smartphones, including the HTC 10, One M9 and One A9. However, the company didn’t say when the firmware would be released.
Google revealed in June that the next version of the Android operating system will be called Nougat. The company made the announcement at its campus in Mountain View, California, and also on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat and Google Plus.
Meanwhile, the final developer preview of Android 7.0 Nougat is already available, and the stage is getting set for the public release of the next Android version, with prominent leakster Evan Blass also saying Saturday that the new update is expected in August.
