Microsoft touts Windows 10 as the most secure Windows ever. The company has been adding new security features to the operating system over the past couple of months with updates to the OS. Most recently, the company added Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (WDATP) to Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update which allows enterprise customers to detect and respond to advanced attacks on their network.
Now, according to a new report from ARN, Microsoft has apparently teamed up with security vendor FireEye. As part of the partnership, Microsoft will give FireEye access to all the telemetry coming from every Windows 10 device in the world. FireEye’s Vice President of Corporate Development stated that the company will be able to offer “differentiated intelligence” on Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection thanks to the partnership with Microsoft. He added:
“FireEye has invested in nation-state grade intelligence and we are strategically partnering with industry leaders to operationalise this high-quality intel,”
The partnership is expected to benefit both Microsoft and FireEye. However, this also raises some questions regarding the privacy of Windows 10 users. Both FireEye and Microsoft believes that the partnership will improve security in Windows 10 as the companies will be using the data to improved Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection — so it will be interesting to see if this actually does end-up improving security in Windows 10. Of course, Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection is mostly for enterprise customers, but Microsoft and FireEye are using telemetry from all Windows 10 users to improve WDATP’s features.
