Time to swell with pride! We Indians are officially obsessed with our Android phones, downloading the most number of Android apps than anywhere else in the whole world, according to a global report analysing app download behaviour.
INDIANS DOWNLOADED OVER 62 CRORE ANDROID APPS THROUGHOUT 2016, THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF DOWNLOADS IN THE WORLD
According to a report from App Annie, Indians downloaded over 6.2 billion apps through Google Play on their Android phones in 2016 alone, a significant jump from 3.6 billion app downloads reported in 2015. Not surprising, as 97% of India’s over 220 million smartphone users have Android smartphones.
What’s interesting is that this is the first time any country, let alone India, has toppled the US from the top spot when it comes to most number of Android apps downloaded annually in the world. Just behind China, India is the second-largest smartphone market in the world and ahead of the US, too, so it makes sense that Indians rank at #1 in the world when it comes to Android apps download — but we’re also ahead of China, which is quite crazy and just goes to show how obsessed we all are with our respective Android smartphones.
FACEBOOK IS THE MOST DOWNLOADED ANDROID APP IN INDIA
The top three apps downloaded by Indians were Facebook, WhatsApp and UC Browser, whereas Candy Crush, Subway Surfers and Temple Run 2 were the top three Android games downloaded in India throughout 2016.
There are several reasons why Indians have suddenly developed a voracious appetite for Android apps. While Indians may be lapping up smartphones, smartphone users still constitute less than 20% of the overall mobile phones market in the country, and users are extremely data conscious.
GOOGLE PLAY STORE IS A WINDOW TO THE ANDROID APPS UNIVERSE FOR INDIANS
Events like the launch of Reliance Jio 4G VoLTE cellular service, with free 1GB daily data download till March 2017 and Google’s free Wi-Fi at railway stations and Facebook Express Wi-Fi have accelerated Indians’ appetite for Android app downloads. Let’s hope Indians’ interest in Android app downloads doesn’t dampen in the near future!
