T-Mobile has listed down all the eligible Samsung and HTC handsets earmarked to receive the Android 7.0 Nougat OTA update.
For a long time, Google has been prompt in releasing the Nexus handset first with the latest firmware onboard. However, this time around, other OEMs will be leading the way. As you might have already heard, the upcoming LG V20 will be the first smartphone to run Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
Android Nougat For Samsung Handsets
According to T-Mobile’s official website, Android 7.0 Nougat OTA update will be rolled out to the following Samsung handsets:
- Samsung Galaxy Note 5
- Samsung Galaxy Note 7
- Samsung Galaxy S6
- Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
- Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+
- Samsung Galaxy S7
- Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
This does not mean that other Samsung models will not receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update. T-Mobile might update the list later. Even if Samsung fails to roll out the official update to some handsets, unofficial ROMs always pop up just in the time of roll out. For instance, Google’s Nexus 5 is not eligible to get Nougat. However, an unofficial ROM is already available for Nexus 5.
Android Nougat For HTC Handsets
T-Mobile will reportedly be rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update to the HTC 10 and HTC One M9 soon. In fact, past reports suggested that the well-received, upper-mid-range device HTC One A9 is also eligible for the latest firmware.
As of today, T-Mobile website says the devices mentioned above are in testing phase. The reasonable expectation is that this firmware will be ready for roll out in a couple of months after testing and sign off.
Key Android Nougat Features
The Android 7.0 Nougat update comes with multi-window option, Data Saver mode, Google Assistant and Quick Settings customization. To top it off, the firmware also brings in Clear All feature, enhanced notification controls, and a slew of impressive emojis.
Furthermore, Google has enhanced the scope of the Doze Mode, which saves battery by putting the unused background apps and services to sleep. Even though this mechanism was introduced in Android 6.0, the Android 7.0 Nougat update will reportedly help the system decide if the smartphone is in a pocket or a bag. Based on the result, it will determine whether to lower the power or not.
