Back in October last year, Apple upgraded its iPad Pro lineup by launching a new iPad Pro with its A12X Bionic processor and FaceID. And now, the company is all set to refresh its iPad Mini lineup and add a new entry level iPad to its growing array of devices.
Apple launched iPad Mini 4 back in September 2015. The Cupertino, California based company has not refreshed its iPad Mini lineup since then. And now word on the street is that Apple is planning to launch iPad Mini 5 along with two new entry level iPad models in the first half of 2019. Digitimes, quoting industry sources said that the order for Apple’s upcoming iPad models will jointly be handled by three firms. While Taiwan-based General Interface Solution (GIS) will manufacture about 40 per cent of the touch panels needed for the new iPad, the remaining 60 per cent of the touch panels will be jointly made by Taiwan-based TPK Holding and China-based O-film Technology.
Notably, this is not the first time that we are hearing reports of Apple planning to launch iPad Mini 5. Noted Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo late last year predicted that the company could launch a new version of its iPad Mini, possibly iPad Mini 5, with an upgraded processor and a low-cost panel in the spring of 2019. While in his predictions, Kuo did not hint towards the pricing that Apple might use for its fifth generation iPad Mini, however, he did mention that the device wouldn’t feature any major design changes over its predecessor and that users could expect to see Touch ID in iPad Mini 5 when it is launched.
Then again in December last year, China Times reported that Apple could launch a new iPad Mini model along with two low-priced models of its 9.7-inch iPad with a narrower frame and a bigger 10-inch screen in 2019. The mass production of these iPad would begin in the second half of 2019, the report.
While Apple hasn’t made any official announcement yet, the company is known to host special events around March to unveil its new iPad models. So for all we know, iPad Mini 5 may well be on its way.
