I have written about Apple AAPL +1.28%’s big plans for its next iPhone upgrades. But now one of the industry’s best sources has confirmed they are not just big, they are massive…
Acclaimed leak site Mac Otakara reports it has “a reliable supplier source” able to confirm Apple’s new flagship 2018 iPhone will have the largest display of any mass market smartphone at 6.5-inches. Impressively, the site also reveals this so-called ‘iPhone X Plus’ will have a footprint identical to the current 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. And there’s more.
While Apple will deliver the same bezel-less design at the iPhone X to achieve such a large screen size in such a compact body, Mac Otakara says the iPhone X Plus will only be a fraction thicker (0.2mm) despite cramming all this in.
In addition, the site says the iPhone X Plus’ primary rear camera will have a larger sensor and consequently a physically bigger lens. Meanwhile, an upgraded Face ID system on the front will be able to recognise users when the phone is held horizontally. This is a useful change given the portrait-only unlock limitations of Face ID in the current iPhone X.
There’s one more nugget in the Mac Okatara report as well.
The site states Apple’s equally hotly anticipated budget iPhone X (the so-called ‘iPhone X SE’) might be shrunk slightly from the 6.1-inches mentioned in previous reportsto 6-inches exactly. Given the remarkably low price Apple will ask for this model, despite only minor feature compromises, I doubt any potential buyer will be put off by this.
It is worth pointing out Mac Otakara has a decent track record when it comes to insider information on Apple. Most famously, the site was first to reveal Apple would remove the headphone jack from the (then) upcoming iPhone 7. So I’d argue it’s worth being cautiously excited about this latest information.
Especially with Apple’s new iPhones also addressing one of the most expensive frustrations in the current iPhone line-up…
