Pharma company AstraZeneca, which offers a program called Fit2Me that provides diet and lifestyle support for patients with diabetes, is now expanding its offering to include patients with risks for cardiovascular disease. The program is also now available via an iOS and Android app, which has only been the case since the end of June.
The customizable program focuses on four key areas of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease management – food, activity, support team and treatment support. Motivation comes from digital coaches who shepherd people through the process of improving their health and fitness while celebrating success along the way.
Fit2Me, which was launched in 2014, now provides consumers with a customized plan tailored to their unique challenge areas across five of the most prevalent conditions or diseases in the United States, including high cholesterol, heart attack, high blood pressure and high triglycerides.
“AstraZeneca recognizes that type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are complex, multi-faceted conditions that affect millions of Americans and require individualized management approaches,” Jim McDermott, vice president of US medical affairs specializing in diabetes for AstraZeneca, said in a statement. “By expanding Fit2Me’s offerings to people living with or at risk for cardiovascular disease, we’re able to provide the resources and support needed to help improve the overall health of each patient.”
With Fit2Me, people have free access to more than 10,000 diabetes-friendly and heart-healthy recipes, based on criteria from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and American Heart Association (AHA). They’ll also have access to more than 500 physical activities and focused exercises. A new tool called Fit My Fridge has been added that can help users stay on track and find diabetes- and heart-healthy meal options while preparing last-minute meals at home. It offers users more flexibility with meal preparation by aiding them in building healthy meals from ingredients they already have on hand.
AstraZeneca also offers a patient app for medication tracking as well as a support platform for a smart inhaler. When the company launched its patient-facing AZHelps app earlier this summer, Jenny Streets, senior director of customer experience and innovation at AstraZeneca, told MobiHealthNews in an email that their market research showed patients were looking for ways to interact with the company via mobile, and the company had begun a push into the mobile space as a result.
