If you’ve got a shiny new Android smartphone or tablet for Christmas, then you’re going to want some decent games for it.
There are thousands of apps and games available on the Google Play Store – and if you’ve got a new device, the choice can be bewildering.
Google helps things a bit with its top charts, but there are still some great games that slip through the cracks. And what’s more, some games are expensive whilst others can be played for nothing – just watch out for those in-app payments.
The only other thing to be aware of is that because of the huge differentiation in Android devices, not all apps may work on your device. That could be due to the screen size, or what version of the software you’re running.
Still, we’ve done the rounds of the Google Play Store to find the best free Android games you should be playing this Christmas.

Pokémon GO
It had to be Pokémon GO really, didn’t it? The augmented reality game has been the breakout mobile hit of 2016.
If you haven’t got into it yet, it involves walking around to catch virtual creatures before battling them against other players. A few extra treats have been released for the Christmas period, so it’s a good time to get into it.
The game is free to download and play but can require in-app payments.

Clash Royale
A spinoff from Clash of Clans, this is a realtime multiplayer game that Google included on its end-of-year list.
“Collect and upgrade dozens of cards featuring the Clash of Clans troops, spells and defenses you know and love, as well as the Royales: Princes, Knights, Baby Dragons and more. Knock the enemy King and Princesses from their towers to defeat your opponents and win Trophies.”
Simple, right? This game is also free to download but does contain in-app purchases.

Real Racing 3
Real Racing 3 may be a few years old, but it should be first choice for anyone that fancies a proper simulator.
The console-quality graphics look great and there’s loads of depth to this game as well. Win races to earn cash that lets you buy and upgrade a range of fully licensed cars.
Age hasn’t diminished the appeal of this free game and you can post times to race against your friends if they’ve got the game as well.

Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff
Almost like Sim City set in Quahog, this game was developed in collaborations with the writers of the TV show and features plenty of jokes and all the official voices.
Gradually build up your own version of Peter Griffin’s hometown and unlock side-missions and new characters as you go.

Dream League Soccer 2016
This great little football sim has you rising through the ranks to challenge for the Euro League.
The graphics look good on a phone or a tablet screen and you’ve got the usual options to pass, shoot or cross the ball.
One word of warning: although this game is free, it makes use of in-app purchases so be careful you don’t end up spending too much.

Best Android apps for your new phone
Aside from just gaming, there are loads of useful apps waiting on the Google Play Store.
Even if you’ve got the usual suspects like WhatsApp, Snapchat and Mirror Online on your phone, here are a few extra that you might have missed.
Google’s video-calling app Duo allows you to video call anyone on your contacts list who also has the app – a bit like Skype or Apple’s FaceTime.
However, another one to consider is Prisma, the app that turns your photos into incredibly realistic looking paintings using artificial intelligence.
All you have to do to find any of the apps or games mentioned here is follow the links or visit the Google Play Store on your phone or tablet.
