Blackberry is finally set to unveil its Mercury flagship smartphone. The device was briefly teased during CES 2017, and now the brand has officially stated that the device is scheduled to reveal ahead of MWC 2017 on February 25.
Blackberry tweeted about the unveiling on its official Twitter handle.
The device was being showcased by media houses with various features hidden. One of the most prominent features of the Mercury is the physical keyboard on the smartphone. The device will rock a trusty Blackberry QWERTY keyboard.
However, the keyboard won’t be a sliding unit as seen on the Priv. Instead, the device will feature the keyboard in a candy bar form, which will be connected to the touch screen, and will also feature a trackpad like the Priv.
The actual screen size of the device still isn’t revealed as of now, however looking at the images of the device it hints at a compact overall smartphone.
Actual specifications for the smartphone still remains unknown, however considering this will be a flagship smartphone we can very well expect Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 or the newly unveiled 835 be at the heart of the smartphone.
The rear of the device also looks really interesting with a giant camera module. The device could hold a powerful optic setup.
TCL Communication had said in a press statement, “The latest BlackBerry smartphone is focused on three core features: security, productivity and reliability. Previewed at CES, the smartphone draws on unparalleled mobile security and software expertise to offer a complete end-to-end smartphone security available on Android.”
It has also been confirmed that the device will run on Android 7.0 Nougat right out-of-the-box along with security features by Blackberry deeply integrated into the UI.
Will this be the smartphone that pulls out BlackBerry from its dark days? We sincerely hope so!
