Editor’s notes:
The circle of health is a patient-facing app developed by the Fundación Pro CNIC in Spain in collaboration with Dr. Valentin Fuster, Director of Mount Sinai Heart and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, with a view to improve cardiovascular health worldwide. The app focuses on reducing six main modifiable cardiovascular (CV) risk factors leading to CV disease, which include:
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- High blood pressure
- Smoking
- Lack of exercise
CV disease remains the number one cause of mortality in the world, responsible for 17.3 million deaths per year as per CDC. In the US, almost 787,000 people died from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases in 2011. The total expenditure of cardiovascular diseases and stroke combined is $320.1 billion, which includes direct and indirect health costs and lost productivity.
This app adopts a preventable strategy toward CV disease and hopes to promote healthy behavior habits in individuals at risk for CV disease. It provides the following content:
- Information: on the six CV risk factors with suggestions
- Challenges: questionnaire to measure the six above mentioned risk factors
- Motivation: toward important life lessons for personal growth and enhancement
