Shooting (women): Heena Sidhu failed to qualify for the finals of 10m Air Pistol. She finished 14th.
Shooting (men): Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Kynan Chenai were a poor 17th and 19th respectively on the first day of qualifying, leaving slim chances of reaching the semifinals.
Hockey (women): The Indian team, playing an Olympic match for the first time in 36 years, made a spirited comeback to hold Japan to a 2-2 draw.
Archery (women): The fancied recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi crashed out losing to Russia in the quarter-finals.
Gymnastics (women): Dipa Karmakar qualifies for Vault Final finishing 8th in the qualifying round.
WORLD RECORD GOLD: Three-time World Champion Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom breaks the world record to win women’s 100 meters butterfly gold. She clocked 55.48 seconds, surpassing her own record of 55.64 seconds.
WORLD RECORD GOLD: Britain’s Adam set a new world record on his way to winning the gold medal in the Olympic men’s 100m breaststroke. He clocked 57.13 seconds, smashing his own world best of 57.55 set a day earlier.

Update on Dipa Karmakar’s Vault Final Qualification: There are total five subdivisions in artistic gymnastics with four rotations (vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise) in each. Only three of those five subdivisions have finished. So until all the subdivisions are over, the top eight scorers in each of the rotations can’t be ascertained (top eight reach the final). The fifth and last rotation is around 7 a.m. on August 8, which is when we will know if Dipa has made it or not. She is currently sixth in vault.
