As iPad fans await news about the upcoming iPad mini 5, the next model in Apple’s 7.9-inch iPad lineup, reports have cast doubt on the highly anticipated device’s release. Some are now suggesting that the iPad mini 5 could be replaced by a different Apple tablet, possibly the rumored iPad Pro mini.
Based on reports from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could be phasing out its iPad mini line in favor of the iPad Pro range. Kuo said that three new iPads will be unveiled this year, possibly in March. These include a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, a 10-inch iPad, and a new 9.7-inch model that will be marketed as an entry-level iPad. Because Kuo has made no mention of the iPad mini 5, many have speculated that there will be no more new models for the iPad mini line.
PC Advisor U.K. notes that while it is unclear if a mini model of the iPad Pro is even feasible, replacing the iPad mini 5 with an iPad Pro mini is not an unprecedented move given how Apple launched the 9.7-inch iPad Pro in 2016 when everyone was expecting the debut of the iPad Air 3. However, there also suggestions that Apple will probably choose to keep the “Pro” name for its larger tablets, keeping them distinct and separate from the iPad mini line. While it remains to be seen if the next iPad mini model will be called the iPad mini 5 or will be “rebranded” into the iPad Pro mini, the device is expected to come loaded with Apple’s A9 processor and a minimum of 32 GB of storage. The device’s chassis is said to be made with the same 7000-series aluminum as the previous iPad mini models, but could reportedly be thinner than its predecessors. There has also been talk about the next iPad mini having Apple Pencil support, 3D Touch, and NFC
