After several weeks of developer and public beta versions, Apple today has officially released OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 through the Mac App Store for all users. The latest software update to OS X El Capitan will likely be the last before Apple releases macOS Sierra 10.12 with new features including Siri later this fall.
Aside from bringing Siri to the Mac, macOS Sierra will bring Apple Pay to Safari, video picture-in-picture, auto-unlock to Apple Watch users, universal clipboard between macOS Sierra and iOS 10, an updated Photos app with the return of the Places view and a new object recognization engine, new iCloud features like optimized storage and desktop sync, and more. macOS Sierra is still in beta, however, with OS X El Capitan still the current stable release.
Based on the time between the first developer beta in late May and today’s release, Apple appears to be putting extra care on OS X 10.11.6 as it could easily be the last software update for Macs not upgrading to macOS Sierra later this fall. Check the Mac App Store’s Updates tab to download and install OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.
