House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters Tuesday that he thought Donald Trump’s controversial“Second Amendment” comments sounded like “a joke gone bad.”
The Republican was speaking to reporters following his victory over a primary challenger in Wisconsin.
“I’ve been a little busy today, I’ve heard about this Second Amendment quote. It sounds like just a joke gone bad. I hope he clears it up very quickly, you should never joke about something like that,” Ryan said. “I didn’t actually hear the comments, I only heard about those comments.”
Ryan reiterated his past statements that Donald Trump would be better for picking Supreme Court justices than Hillary Clinton.
Trump set off a fresh round of criticism on Tuesday when he suggested that Second Amendment supporters could stop a president Clinton from appointing Supreme Court justices.
“Hillary wants to abolish . . . the Second Amendment,” Trump said in Wilmington, N.C., before speaking about filling an empty seat on the Supreme Court. “By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”
