Pikachu without charges – July 19th

Pokemon go is everywhere. The latest mobile app craze, which launched two weeks tomorrow. Now it has nearly as many active users as social media giants like twitter and snapchat.

Louis Hoeser of AT&T joined Hello Wisconsin with helpful tips on controlling data usage for all the gamers out there.

The game uses an augmented reality app and involves players catching and training special creatures called Pokemon. Pokemon Go has people searching malls, woods, churches, stores, parks, even a police department for the little creatures.

But all that gaming can blow through a gamer’s data pretty quickly. So here are 5 tips from AT&T for playing Pokemon Go without breaking the bank:

1. Keep your WiFi on: When you’re logged in to play the game, make sure your WiFi is turned on and set to automatically connect to any available network.
2. Turn off automatic app updates: If you’re worried about going over your data limit, another easy way to cut back is to disable automatic updates.
3. Make sure you CLOSE the app when you’re not playing: As long as the app is running in the background, your data is being used!
4. Keep your phone charged: Buy an extra battery, a back-up battery pack or carry an on-the-go wireless charger.
5. Monitor your data usage closely while playing the game: AT&T customers can do this using the MyATT app or by dialing *DATA# on their smartphone.

And most importantly, watch where you’re going while pursuing Pokemon, or you could end up some place you don’t want to be!

Keep Your Battery Charged

Pokemon Go uses your phone’s GPS functions, its camera, its wireless network, and its touchscreen…

That said – it can be quite draining on your phone’s battery.

One way to make sure your phone never runs out of juice while you’re out catching Pokemon is to always carry an on-the-go wireless charger.

Another option: Adjust the settings! If you turn off the game’s music, sound effects or other add-ons – you could save some battery power.

Stay Safe!

We love when mobile apps like Pokemon Go catch on and become trends – but it’s always important to remember that there’s a time and place to enjoy these games…

And that time and place is NEVER while you’re behind the wheel of a car.

Since 2010, AT&T has been working to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving through its national It Can Wait campaign.

But new research shows text messaging is just part of the problem of distracted driving.

– 7 out of 10 drivers use their smartphones while driving
– 4 in 10 admit to tapping into social media
– 3 in 10 are surfing the web
– Some drivers are even video-chatting and taking pictures while they’re behind the wheel!

If you find yourself tempted to log into the app while you’re driving, consider downloading the AT&T DriveMode App.

DriveMode blocks incoming texts, calls and app notifications from your phone while your car is in motion – and automatically responds to your friends and family that you’ll respond when your car is safely parked.

Remember: No notification – not even a Pikachu siting – is worth a life. It Can Wait.
