How will Microsoft respond? It appears that the PlayStation 4K is a thing. What was part of speculation just a few weeks back could actually turn out to be a reality, as Sony explores the possibility.
This is, of course, a new version of the PS4 console that is supposed to offer better hardware.
Some are calling it the PlayStation 4.5.
But some reliable new reports are now confirming that the Japanese company is working on the device, and will make an official announcement about it soon — and not just that, Sony already has prototype units that are being tested for what new game experiences they can be launched with.
Apparently, the biggest draw of this new model of the popular gaming console is that it can run both video games and media content in 4K.
And that is possible because of the more powerful graphics processing unit that it houses, designed by AMD featuring either 14nm or 16nm manufacturing technology, as opposed to the 28nm that the current console features.
Better raw performance makes much more sense for Sony, in that it plans to launch the PlayStation VR platform before the end of the month, and the console will benefit greatly from this added horsepower.
So would Microsoft, as gaming performance on the Xbox One has been a question marks since launch.
Redmond has already talked about a potential upgrade for its console, and although moves like these can create problems where users that purchased the current model of the consoles feel abandoned. More so if they bought them recently.
However, Sony is confident that this is the way forward.
And is said to be preparing an announcement during E3 2016, while delivering this new model to the market before the end of the year.
Microsoft will have to prepare an answer — one way or another.
