The BlackBerry Priv, the first of its kind, is now receiving another Android Marshmallow update. The smartphone is the first to run on Android OS yet is made by Canada’s BlackBerry, which also has its own OS in the shape of BlackBerry 10.
While the handset started receiving the Marshmallow update sometimes back, this did not stop with the first release. The company has been coming in with similar updates that also include the latest monthly security patches from Google. With this release, the BlackBerry Priv has now received a record eight Android Marshmallow beta updates, which is somehow strange for users of the handset.
The first Android Marshmallow beta update for the Priv came in mid-April. Another update followed suit the same month and three more came during the month of May. The month of June saw two more Marshmallow beta updates hit the Priv, with the only update to come this July being the one that is currently being rolled out. It first showed up on July 29, but it does not include those models tied to Verizon and AT&T carriers in the U.S.
The latest BlackBerry Priv update will take the device’s build version number to AAF960, but only those who are part of the Priv beta program will be able to get the update. Other than the “lots of fixes” the company says the update brings to the Priv, the new Marshmallow beta also equips the handset with the most up to date security patch from the month of August.
On other related matters, BlackBerry recently unveiled a second of its new Android-powered handsets, which is the BlackBerry DTEK50. Like its counterpart, the device comes already packed with Android Marshmallow, but it has not yet been made available for purchase just yet. The phone puts lots of emphasis on security, just like the Priv, only that it is available for about half the price of the flagship BlackBerry Priv.
